Rocks play a role in both the aesthetics and functionality of your water feature. At New Hope Aquascapes, we are excited to embark on the water feature design process with you, and we want to offer some advice on choosing the right rocks for your new waterfall, pond, or other type of water feature.
With so many different types of rock to choose from, we suggest starting with these guidelines when you begin the water feature design process:
- Choose rocks that naturally occur in your area — If you want to tie in your water feature with the surrounding landscape, it’s best to select rocks that are indigenous to your area. As a bonus, rocks that naturally occur in your area won’t have to be shipped very far, which can lead to savings on the cost of materials.
- Don’t mix multiple rock types — Your water feature should have a cohesive, natural look. For this reason, stick to the same type of rock. This will also prevent your water feature from looking haphazardly thrown together.
- Vary your rock sizes — When choosing rocks, go for a variety of sizes. This will help you create the most natural look for your waterfall or pond. We typically recommend sticking to this formula: 1 part small rock, 2 parts medium rock, and 1 part large rock.
When you take these guidelines into consideration during the water feature design process, you can create a stunning water feature with appeal that withstands the test of time. For more information or to start designing your water feature, contact us now.
