The Top Pond Installation Mistakes to Avoid

The details matter, so here are the top pond installation mistakes we avoid to make sure the ponds we design and install turn out exactly the way they were envisioned:

  • Poor location — We avoid putting in ponds in unused areas of property or building them in low spots that collect water. We always bring the pond as close to the house and viewing areas as possible.
  • Underestimating labor — Installing a pond requires more physical labor than you might think. We consider the location of the pond, the type of soil, the topography, and other factors when considering how long it will take to excavate the pond site.
  • Steep sides — When digging ponds, we make sure there are shallow areas, so that stacking stone on the inside of the pond is possible. Avoiding deep sides also ensures there are ledges for aquatic plants.
  • Lack of edges — We always include edges when digging a pond, so there is plenty of room for boulders and rocks.
  • Too shallow — While digging a shallow pond is easier than digging a deeper one, we always make sure our ponds are deep enough. And if you want to put fish in your pond, we will always aim for a minimum of 24 inches.
  • Improper use of rock and stone — We include a mix of larger and smaller, manageable stones. This ensures the pond is structurally sound and that it has a desirable, natural appearance.
  • Too small — While smaller ponds are easier to construct, they can be harder to maintain. We always aim to go bigger when building ponds, so the fish and plants don’t outgrow the available space.
  • Poor filtration — Filtration is key to a low-maintenance pond. We always pair the skimmer with a biological filter and a properly sized pump to ensure easy maintenance.
  • Improper waterfall berm size — We always make sure that any included waterfalls aren’t too small or too steep. We make sure the waterfall complements the scope of the pond and lifestyle of the homeowner.
  • Poor access — We always consider where to place the rock and gravel when it’s delivered and where to put the dirt during excavation, making it easier to get in and out of the property during construction.
